GMO’s – those things we all know about, but don’t actually know much about. GMO’s are genetically modified organisms. So basically the genetic material of an organism has been altered by genetic engineering. Scientists alter the genetic structure of seeds so that they can grow in challenging climates, sustain weed killers and give our fruits and vegetables a longer shelf life.
When GMO’s were first introduced we were told they would end world hunger. Sounds pretty great right!
GMO’s weren’t created to end world hunger otherwise this would have been achieved by now. They were created by giant corporations purely for profit and the extent of the damage GMO’s are causing to our health and environment is still vastly unknown.
GMO crops can sustain herbicides, pesticides and insecticides, which means farmers can dose our food in toxic chemicals without killing the plant or seed. Therefore when we consume these foods we are also consuming a large number of toxins. We are ultimately poisoning ourselves from the food we eat; and they aren’t just killing us. They are also killing insects and animals from these sprays and destroying our soil and ground water quality while they’re at it.
In recent years scientists carried out research on rats (which is another debate in itself) and the effects GMO’s had on these rats were horrifying. The majority of these rats developed allergies, tumors, organ damage, liver and kidney damage and cancers among many other serious health conditions. 70% of the females died earlier than expected and their young were born sterile.
Knowing all this, now think about what GMO’s are potentially doing to you and your child’s body once you consume them. Our farms have become toxic food crops and allergies in children have already doubled since GMO foods were first introduced.
It’s not just our fruit and vegetables we need to be concerned about either. A lot of alcohols, dairy products, sodas, breads and other foods contain GMO ingredients now. Over 90% of soy that is produced is genetically modified. So to nurture your child and their growing body, say hell no to GMO’s. Read labels, ask questions about the foods you are purchasing and buy organic where possible. Taking a proactive and conscious approach with what you are feeding your child is ones of the best ways you can ensure you are creating a healthy child. Fuelling them for a long and healthy life.
