Lets be real, we’ve all heard that Wi-Fi is bad for us, but how many of us actually give a rats badonkadonk and are creating ways to reduce our exposure? Not enough of us id say. Wi-Fi’s a bloody brilliant invention, but it’s not so good for our health.
Wi-Fi and other electronic devices emit radiation known as an electromagnetic frequency (EMF). Laptops, mobile phones and your wireless router are the worst offenders, emitting an extremely high frequency but most of your household items like your microwave, TV, hairdryer and stereo also emit EMF radiation.
So why is this EMF radiation bad? Well besides from us knowing that ‘radiation’ is bad for us; headaches, fatigue, sleeping disorders, low immunity, anxiety, depression, cognitive impairment and concentration issues are all common side effects of EMFs … annnd cancer.1 EMFs haven’t been officially labeled a carcinogenic but it’s only a matter of time as high frequency EMFs can be associated with brain tumors and many other serious diseases including cancer.1
Although avoiding EMF radiation is not realistic in today’s society, we need to do all we can to protect our children from it. Children and fetuses are way more susceptible in absorbing EMF radiation because, “their skulls are thinner, and their brain tissue is more absorbent.”2
So here are 10 easy ways to reduce your child’s exposure to EMF radiation:
1. Turn off and unplug your Wi-Fi and other devices when they are not in use
If you are not using your Wi-Fi then turn it off! Don’t leave any electronic devices running which are freely emitting radiation.
2. Don’t let your child play with your mobile phone
OK, so I know this is a hard one but if your child is playing with your mobile, be sure to switch it to flight mode first, and never allow them press it against their ear. Ensure they use the speakerphone setting when talking to save their sweet developing brain from an extreme dose of radiation.
3. Grab yourself a Salt Lamp
Salt lamps generate negative ions and we love negative ions! Positive ions are created by electronic devices; and thankfully negative ions are able to neutralise the positive ions in our air reducing our exposure to EMFs. Salt lamps also make great nightlights.3
4. Get your child outside and onto the earth
‘Earthing’ drains static electricity and EMF radiation from our bodies. Get your child outdoors in their bare feet so that they can connect to the earth’s own electromagnetic field and soak up natures negative ions.4
5. Buy Bees Wax Candles
Just like Salt lamps, bees wax candles produce negative ions purifying the air. Just make sure its 100% pure bees wax.5
Crystals emit an electromagnetic energy as well; but this energy we like. You can wear crystals or place them around the house. Black Tourmaline, Amazonite, Lepidolite, Iodestine, Sodalite and Smokey Quartz are a few goodies for EMF protection.6
7. Go green with indoor plants
Plants filter the air by neutralising harmful particles. They have a filtration system, which cleans the air. Check out NASA’s list of indoor plants that can remove up to 87% of pollutants in our air. Spider plants, English Ivy, Flamingo Lily, Peace Lily and Gerbera Daisies are a few listed. The best for reducing EMF seems to be Cactus and Bamboo. It is believed Cactus plants are able to counteract the effects of EMF radiation emitted, so place one by your TV and computer. Bamboo is great at absorbing EMF radiation.2
8. Keep electronic devices as far away from the body as possible
Don’t let your child sit with an iPad or laptop resting on their body. Get them to sit at a table or desk and ensure the device is as far away from them as possible. This goes for your router too.
9. Buy Product Shields
There are many different shielding products available these days; from heat shields that you sit your laptop on, radiation blocking cell phone cases and neutralisation stickers that you can put on your mobile phone and other electronic device. You can even buy fabrics, paints and screens to block and reduce EMF radiation.
10. Remove all electronic devices from the bedroom
As well as turning off the Wi-Fi at night, remove all electronic devices from your child’s bedroom. EMFs can interfere with their sleep and affect their body’s ability to restore itself. If your currently using a baby monitor, remember you are exposing your precious little one to a hefty amount of radiation, is it really worth it?
When it comes to EMF radiation I believe the best defense is being conscious and aware, continuing to take active steps in monitoring and reducing your child’s exposure wherever possible.
